About Me:
Joel William Kern, LCSW, CSAYC (He/They)
In the 6th grade at Goshen Middle School I was assigned an essay with the prompt, “What I want to be when I grow up.” It is no surprise that the answer was a therapist. Since being a young child I have been drawn by an interest in helping others with their psychological needs and consider myself quite fortunate to be able to make this my life’s work.
I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who has been providing services to Adults, Children, and Adolescents for over 11 years. I earned my Master’s of Social Work from the Jane Addams College of Social Work at the University of Illinois, Chicago. I also hold a certificate in Evidence Based Practices with Children and Adolescents from the Illinois Department of Higher Education. I am a Credentialed Sexually Assaultive Youth Clinician (CSAYC) through the Advocacy and Training Alliance and a field supervisor for work with youth who have Problematic Sexual Behaviors. I have had extensive experience working in outpatient mental health treatment, youth residential, home health, hospice, and clinical care management.
My approach to therapy is very much informed by Dialectical Behavioral Therapy. I believe that the therapeutic relationship is a "real relationship," where the provider and client are working together to balance aspects of acceptance and change in order to increase the ability to cope with difficult life situations and create a life that is experienced as worth living.
I am trained in several treatment modalities and evidence based treatments including: Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy(CBT), Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) Sexually Harmful Behavior treatment (SHB), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and Parent Management Training (PMT).
I work with children, adolescents, and adults. I specialize in working with Anxiety, Depression, Borderline Personality Disorder, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and other trauma related issues, Problematic Sexual Behaviors, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, and issues related to gender identity, sexuality, and membership in the LGBTQ+ community.
